4. When you’ve got a good base of gelatin on, apply a thin layer of cornstarch. This will help the gelatin not be so sticky to the touch. Just pat the fake skin to remove the any excess cornstarch. See image j.

5. Press down firmly on the edges of the fake skin so that it blends seamlessly with the real stuff.

6. Now let’s make some gnarly claw marks. Lay the edge of the knife against the fake skin and press down. Don’t slice! Just push the blade slightly to the side to form the gash. Repeat to make four claw marks. See image k.

7. Again, apply some cornstarch to the gashes and pat away the excess. See image l.

8. OK—this is where things will start to look intense. Drip some of your freshly made blood into the wounds. Then smear more blood over the fake skin until no cornstarch is visible. See images m and n.

9. If you’re camping, send your kid out with the bottle of fake blood so that he can pour the rest of it over his wound (and face!) before he comes screaming back into camp, recounting his ghastly bear tale.

10. Calm your child down and tell him not to worry, and that you’ll have him stitched up in a jiffy. Pull out the needle and fishing line and get to work, being careful, of course, to stitch up the fake skin and not his actual arm.

11. Watch the other campers gasp in horror.
